The most iconic sunglass in hip-hop history is undeniably the XXL. Often mistaken for a Vintage Cazal, the XXL has played the largest, most iconic role in the past 50 years of hip-hop. With hip-hop celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the legendary DMC of Run-DMC took the stage last night at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, front and center with his iconic look.
The Vintage Frames company has prided itself on helping to preserve the rich fashion culture of hip-hop. A couple of years back, CEO Corey Shapiro got to collaborate with Run DMC on celebrating the 35th anniversary. The legendary anniversary XXL was born and sold out in minutes.
Although many are familiar with the frame, very few are familiar with the story of how the XXL became so iconic. In 1987 Run DMC opened up for the Beastie Boys at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The crowd was so crazy that the group had to run from the venue. While running, legendary music mogul, Lior Cohen, trampled his frames as they were running away from the eager crowd. DMC’s necessity of having larger and thicker frames due to his prescription being so heavy is how the XXL found its place in history.
The XXL has since dominated pop-culture with making appearances in blockbuster movies such as Casino, Ocean’s Eleven, and on many different musicians and actors.
The Vintage Frames company has the largest XXL collection in the world, with many different variants and lens customization options. You can change the lenses into your everyday pair of eyeglasses and even add a tint into them. Just like DMC.
